Target Mumbai

Terror strikes Mumbai again. A new terror date is created--26/11. Yes, nobody knows where when and what next. And WHY.

Cricket Vibes

After many years India is fast adopting a positive ruthless attitude and is winning matches consistently. Defeated Aus in ODI 2-0, Aus in Test 2-0 and defeated England in ODI with a 4-0 lead. But some people, so much used to a negative mindset, are giving odd reactions. One reporter of a channel started babbling what England is doing and what it's supposed to do. Well, it's a fact that the weaker team always loses and you don't ask, hey buggers, why are you so weak! You criticize them identifying the areas of weakness. But you have to laud the winning team for its victory. Mercifully the reporter was cut short. Another scribe wrote that England lost the last two matches due to the D-L method. Yes, the D-L rules are complex, but it cannot possibly harm the better team. In the Kanpur ODI (Nov 20, 2008) India was in a sound position, 198/5 needing only 43 runs off 9 overs and at that point they won by 16 runs due to D-L. What's wrong in that? In the Bangalore

Longest Break!

...well, that's it! In the meantime the N-Deal was through with nobody quite being able to have the last laugh. Anyway, history was made. In the meantime most powerful blasts ravaged my hometown Guwahati and my home state Assam. Just ten days back we were there moving around most of the places targetted. The fear was there, but securtiy was utterly lacking. Well why innocents are being killed everywhere with nobody knowing where when what next. What purpose it serves? We were there for one month. Organized a musical function in fond memory of our father Bibekananda Bhattacharyya on the occasion of his first death anniversary, in Guwahati, Sept 28, 2008. The function named 'Prashanti' was a huge success with the innovative ways it was conducted. Ragini and myself compiled and edited a small book too as a souvenir. We hope to make it an annual musical event on 28th of any winter month, because 28th is our father's birth, death and marriage date which is significant

Longer Break!

...well, no excuses! In my latest ezine aricle we posed the question about who would have the last laugh on the N Deal. Well, too many laughs, but the last is still to come! On winning the trust vote convincingly the Indian government laughed merrily. Then, a few days back the opposition parties and the leftist laughed a lot. Then again on NSG winner the govenment had the heartiest laugh. Yet, the Deal is still to be through. What a Deal! If the Deal is finally passed the left parties would wait for the next government to come after winning the elections and scrap it. Just chill!

Long Break!

Quite a long break. Well, busy with work in office and not rather keeping fit. So it was mostly rest at home. In the meantime the political rampage in India is still going on. Now the trust vote will be done on a special session of Parliament on July 21-22. If the government win the trust vote the nuclear deal is through. For now the left-right megamix (the left political parties and the fundamentalist right wing parties coming together to bring the government down)is rocking!

Loan Wavering!

The most discussed the most debated the most controversial hottest topic at the moment in India is the loan waiver granted by the Union Budget-2008-09 to all small and marginal farmers holding upto 5 acres of land. There are more demands now-that is say maybe more greed- by all political parties. 'Give loan waiver to big farmers too holding land beyond 5 acres'. 'Give it to other communities too like the fishemen folks'. 'Give it to all poor folks'. One smart reporter in a news room had a fertile suggestion. 'Why not demonstrate for a complete loan waiver to all credit card holders!' Right buddy! So many credit card holders are plagued by goons invading their homes to recover the dues.

Never Go For Unsolicited Credit Cards

Beware! You get calls on your mobile all the time offering you credit cards with lots of promise. The freelance agents will tell you it's a lifetime free card and many other features. But these features will be missing in the agreement form of the bank if you decide to take it. When you confront him the agent will confirm again it's free. Problems start sooner than one year. If not backing out on other promises the bank will definitely charge the annual fee after a year. Enraged, you will ask them to cancel the damn thing. But they will go on postponing it and go on harrassing you for payment threatening legal action. I'm still having such a problem with the largest nationalized bank of India, the State Bank of India. So, what to expect from others? It's better not to make such mistakes at all.

Shoot Me!

A big burly guy along with some of his supporters barged into the news room of a TV channel. He encountered the editor directly and started bragging about his activities on that particular day. 'Other channels only covered my function, but for you I'm coming physically and exclusively. Please call your camera team and start my interview.' The harassed editor somehow managed to convince the guest that he would be called to the studio at the earliest and for the moment he should leave his documents.

Less Fun More Ire

I said yes to the unsolicited credit card offer because it came from the biggest natiionalized bank, State Bank of India (SBI). That was the first mistake. Recently SBI Cards offered me a travel agency, arzoo.com, which had special discounts on air tickets. And in an emergency I booked a ticket online. No confirmation nor e-ticket came. But the consumer executive Sandeep Lade phoned me and said that the air fare offered was not actually available, it was there by mistake. He said he was reversing the transaction immediately. So I went for the next lowest fare and booked another ticket. This time the e-ticket came. Some hours later I again confirmed with Sandeep that the earlier transaction was reversed. But in my next month's SBI Card statement both transactions were billed. Yes, one amount for no ticket and one amount for ticket. My requests, follow-ups and outbursts failed both with SBI Card and arzooo.com. I lost the money and peace of mind. Well, you may please be carefu

My two fathers

Yes, I have two fathers and it's not a joke. My father by birth, Amulya Kumar Chakravarty was an author and translator of world epics. He translated Homer's Odyssey and Illiad, and Virgil's Aeneid into Assamese. These great books are milestones in Assamese literature. And he was a great friend of mine. I lost him in 1991, but he continues to live with us. My father by marriage, Bibekananda Bhattacharya was a great musician, composer and tabla player. From the fifties he had been accompanying legendary artistes on tabla, composing great songs including film music and doing scholarly research in music. IAnd he was a great friend of mine. I lost him in 2007, but he continues to live with us. I consider myself very fortunate to have two such great father friends and unfortunate to lose them both--well, physically.
