Fight Against Corruption: Baba Ramdev New Savior?

Image
The righteous minded hates corruption and wants this evil eradicated from India or possibly form planet Earth. Therefore, when Anna Hazare launched a movement in April, 2011 he immediately enjoyed unprecedented mass support and captured the national stage. Inspired by Anna’s achievement the immensely rich yoga guru Baba Ramdev jumped in the fray too with a movement against a related factor of black money. History was created. As the internal contradictions within Team Anna grew mass support for the movement began to wane. The Mumbai fast in December, 2011 was a terrible flop and the situation further worsened with Anna Hazare falling sick frequently and going on a silence vow. Team Anna was plunged into severe introspection.  Maybe inspired by Baba Ramdev’s star power, this time Anna Hazare decided to join hands and the two cult figures celebrated their union with a one-day token fast in Delhi in June, 2012. Sometime later both of them held a joint press conference and anno

Politics: A Question About Legitimacy!

Image
Article first published as Indian Politics: The Legitimacy Syndrome! on Technorati. One has to search the pages of history frantically to find when exactly someone might have called an elected government an illegitimate child. If the search was unsuccessful do not despair as yet, because it just happened in the largest democracy of the world. It happens only in India, if you want to buzz!  It happened right in the floor of the lower house of the Indian Parliament. It happened in the very first day of the monsoon session that started today, Wednesday, the 8 th of August, 2012. It was expected the opposition political parties would storm the house on several burning issues ranging from ethnic violence to ongoing scams. But nobody could anticipate the desperation to reach such depraved levels.  And, the question of legitimacy was raised by none other than the senior most opposition leader of the country, the former Deputy Prime Minister of India, the opposition leader

Cricket T20: Pathan Stars As India Thump Sri Lanka!

Image
Pathan Gets Mahela! Irfan Pathan who came back strongly in the Micromax Cup cricket one-day series captured the first three Sri Lankan wickets as India won the one-off T20 encounter against Sri Lanka today at Pallekele by 39 runs. Sri Lanka won the toss and put India in. RMS Eranga who made his T20 debut today got the wicket of Gautam Gambhir in his first over and the second of the innings, and he had a terrific achievement of getting a first-over wicket in all his debuts in Tests, ODIs and T20. Then it was the Micromax Cup Man of the Series, Virat Kohli again who took absolute control of the innings first with Ajinkya Rahane and then with Suresh Raina. But India was not allowed to run away to a huge score by some consistent Sri Lankan bowling and fielding. Virat was the third down for an individual 68 in the 17 th over with the team score reading 129/3. Skipper Dhoni joined Suresh Raina and the duo took the score to 155 through some hard work. RMS Eranga finished with two I

Firing In USA Gurudwara: American Society Becoming Intolerant?

Image
A peaceful place of worship for the Sikh community, called Gurudwara or temple, in a serene location of the Midwest district of the US, Wisconsin. Over 300 hundred Sikh Americans had assembled there for morning prayers on August 5, 2012, and preparations were also going on for a meal after the rituals. Understandably a lot of women and children were also there. Suddenly a bald and stocky white man with two handguns walked in and started firing indiscriminately. At least six people got killed instantly with scores injured. But for an exceptional promptness and bravery by an American policeman who attended to the SOS call immediately and got critically injured in the ensuing encounter, the toll could have been much bigger. As the FBI took up the investigations speculation was rife about possible motives . Was this horrific incident a case of domestic terrorism as suggested or hate crimes or antics of a trigger-happy psychopath? Since the killed gunman was identified as an ex-US

London Olympics-2012: After Fixing Now Cheating!

Image
London Olympics-2012 is also going to be remembered for an entire set of wrong reasons! The fixing charges in Badminton Women’s Doubles matches created waves of consternation throughout the globe. The charges were proved to be true as all eight badminton players from China , South Korea and Indonesia involved in fixing tactics were disqualified. At the same time a whole lot of cheating charges had been coming slowly out in the open. The cases of cheating somehow seemed to affect mostly Indian athletes, particularly the boxers. While a vast nation stuffed with over a billion human beings still search hungrily for the first Gold medal some Olympic officials were hell bent on denying them even the deserved honors. The first anomaly was noticed in the London Olympics inauguration ceremony itself when a mysterious lady in red was seen accompanying the Indian contingent for no connected reasons. She was not a part of the contingent and still was devouring prime focus. Later it

They have won the Micromax Cup-2012 winning the series 4-1. With this series win India climbed to No.2 position in the ICC one-day rankings. They could have regained the No.1 spot had they won 5-0. Dhoni was ably supported by all-rounder Irfan Pathan in a decisive partnership. Earlier, winning the toss and electing to bat first India banked heavily on Gambhir’s solid knock of 88 runs to build the innings. Virat Kohli started well, but could not last long. Rohit Sharma failed for the fifth time and Suresh Raina, the stylish unbeaten finisher of the last two matc

Fight Against Corruption: Team Anna To Fight Elections!

Image
It was possibly the biggest movement to rock India after Independence. With unprecedented support for the cause the anti-corruption fight started by social activist Anna Hazare in April, 2011 transformed into a mass movement. But the huge success of the movement signaled its downfall too. Thanks to a variety of reasons including contradictions, counter charges and friction within Team Anna and core members’ political ambitions mass support for the movement has been dwindling all the time. Seemingly running out options the movement finally became political. Falling back on its oft-repeated ‘fast’ weapon Team Anna started yet another indefinite fast in New Delhi from July 25, 2012. For a change this time, the core members of the team sat into the fast first with Anna Hazare threatening to join by Sunday, the 29 th of July, if the government did not respond till then. Eventually Anna had to join in. Support for the fast was not even in hundreds in the early days. Sensing t

Love Marriage Or Arranged Marriage?

Image
Love marriage or arranged marriage? Which is better? Better to avoid the marital complexity of loving to love or arranging to love or loving to arrange or loving to adjust or adjusting to love and all that! Better concentrate first on the simplicity of love itself. …Sorry? …For the sake of making a beginning at least… yaar ! Love is not that simple…we know! But what’s wrong in trying? Once upon a time there was an aunt of mine who was waiting for quite a long time to get arranged to marry. With her parents already departed, the brothers tried and failed. It was becoming a matter of serious concern when my mother that is one of the elder sisters of the aunt struck upon a brilliant idea of arrangement. One professionally employed nice and bright boy from the aunt’s native place got appointed in the town we were living in. He used to visit us frequently often making it to lunch or dinners. My mother called her sister over to our place and told her specifically to come for at least

Fixing At The London Olympics?

Image
Badminton competition of the London Olympics-2012 has come under a cloud of match fixing after two women’s doubles matches played yesterday. This is an unprecedented trend affecting the most ancient Games on earth. And this is very worrisome too. The fixing charges involve eight women badminton players—the World Champion pair from China , two pairs from South Korea and one pair from Indonesia . The Badminton competition is being played on a round robin basis for the first time at the London Olympics. All these teams have qualified for the quarter finals and so they allegedly tried to manipulate their preliminary matches so that they avoid meeting their respective compatriots in the semi finals. The two matches involving China and South Korea and then South Korea and Indonesia had been reduced to farces yesterday with all players trying to miss the shots in a desperate attempt to lose. The crowds too sensed the farce and began jeering at the players. Badminton World

Micromax Cup Cricket: India Win ODI Series Against Sri Lanka!

Image
India have won the five-match one day international cricket series  defeating Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the fourth match played in Colombo today. Taking an unassailable lead of 3-1 India is thus set to take home the Micromax Cup in Sri Lanka. The last match to be played in Pallekele on August 4, 2012 is reduced to a formality, but, of course, both teams would like to exit the series positively with a win.  For the second time in Colombo Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. They made a solid start with openers Dilshan (42) and Tharanga (51) putting up 91 runs for the first wicket. The Indian pacers were not effective and went wicketless. Thiramanne chipped in well today made 47 runs with able support from Chandimal. Sri Lanka were poised for a huge total crossing 150 in the 31 st over with the loss of only two wickets. But the slide happened just then. Though Indian skipper Dhoni’s blue eyed boy Rohit Sharma was not dropped after two consecutive ducks Manoj Tiw
