Vizag Gas Tragedy: Compensation Cover For Callousness?

Image
Photo: english.sakshi.com Tragically ironical that in the time the ‘StayHome’ mission people of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh should find themselves forced to run out of their homes in the early hours today terror- struck. A polystyrene gas plant of the LG Polymers near Visakhapatnam started leaking gas in the early hours and the deadly gas started entering into the homes of more than 1000 people of five villages in a 3km radius of the chemical plant. Shocked inhabitants ran out of their homes into the streets breathless and with a burning sensation. Several of them fainted or lost consciousness and fell in the streets while many others ran, sat down or stood there helplessly or loitered around in a daze. However, as against the StayHome irony, at least COVID preparedness of the district helped give immediate relief to the affected with ambulances, oxygen cylinders and ventilators kept in readiness. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also called in. Bringing ba

India Lockdown: The Liquor Lucre And Other Hazards!

Image
Third extension of the India Lockdown from 4 th May,  2020 granted a few relaxations in the sale of non-essentials for the first time covering all zones. With varying levels of restrictions across different Indian states stand-alone shops were allowed to open including liquor shops that were not part of malls or market complexes. The morning of 4th May witnessed unprecedented queuing crowds in front of liquor shops across the country with chaos and violations of social distancing in most places including the national capital Delhi. Now, the hazards of such an exercise were very much expected; then why was it given? Major portions of tax revenues of all the Indian states come from the liquor tax, and the cash-starved states governments bore upon central government to yield this relaxation. In fact, six states immediately increased liquor prices to the extent of 75% to capitalize on this revenue-generating opportunity. Some others pointed out that it was dangerous to keep add

Staying Positive In Corona Times And V For Vaccine?

Image
It sounds incredible that only three months back the old world still existed and went about its ways, except for a small area in China. Since then it's been an immense struggle to stay positive, locked up. During this time the world has managed to learn precious little about the invisible invader. It's one of the most mysterious enemies humankind has ever encountered. Nothing is known about its basic nature; why its virulence is so variable; why it selects some countries with a vengeance and why it's deceptively kind to others. In any case, we just don't know what would be its future course—even in countries that have seemingly thwarted its invasion. China, the origin of the attack, and now in apparent control after a 76-day lockdown, fears a rebound. Some experts even say there is no guarantee that a cured person develops immunity to re-infection. However, we must stay positive and live on hope.  The behavior of fellow human beings disappoints us a lot. Why

The biggest lockdown of the world has just got its third extension with the Government of India announcing this with a host of relaxation of curbs across the zones. The first lockdown of 21 days was extended on 14 th April, 2020 to 3 rd May, 2020 and now Lockdown 2.0 has been extended by another 2 weeks till 17 th May, 2020. This decision was on expected lines as the new COVID cases and new deaths were rising in the last few days, and the only speculation was about how much easing of curbs will be allowed. At present, India has 130 red zones, 284 orange zones and 319 green zones. Easing of the curbs as per the zones is of paramount importance to ensure the plummeting economy does not suffer irreparable damage. First, the basic nation-wide list of activities not allowed irrespective of zones: schools, colleges and educational institutions to remain shut; no air, rail and metro transport services; no inter-state movement except for trucks carrying goods; no cabs, auto-rick
