Funny Memories: The License To Thrill!

Image
In the early eighties, emboldened by the permanent job I finally got, I planned to purchase a second-hand scooter and found a suitable owner. The brand of the scooter was ‘Priya’ which ignited somewhat romantic feelings in me as that word meant ‘Beloved’! I also justified the purchase as it’d help me commute faster to my office, could take my father to his office and back regularly and do the odd jobs like marketing and so on. Therefore, I decided to learn how to drive a scooter. A cousin came forward to help taking me to the highways in the early mornings for days, mostly the weekends.   When I made the deal and brought my ‘Priya’ home I was quite confident of driving. And so, I wanted a license as soon as possible. My father was a high-ranking officer at that time; but he was ruthlessly honest, upright and outspoken and I knew he would never help me in getting the license out of the way. There was no other option but to go to the office of the District Transport Officer (DTO) the

IPL-2022: Mumbai Creates IPL History Of The Wrong Kind!

Image
Mumbai Indians (MI) becomes the first ever franchise in Indian Premiere League (IPL) since its first edition in 2008 to have lost eight games on the trot at any stage of the tournament. After losing a last-ball cliffhanger against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) that MI should’ve won the franchise succumbed to its 8 th loss against the newbie Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) last night at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. The appalling factor about the match was the total listlessness and the utter lack of a will to win on the part of MI. This reflects very badly on its captain and India captain Rohit Sharma that he should fail to regroup his eleven after loss after loss and after loss…! Ironically, as we said in our earlier pieces, all its matches have been played on its ‘home’ grounds and the performances have angered the fans and also cricket lovers, righteously.   Well, the IPL has always been more of a business extravaganza than cricket that does still allow us to have glimpses of exce

IPL-2022: Dhoni Finishes Off Mumbai As The Two Bottom Ranked Champions Produce A Thriller!

Image
It was a rare moment. It was vintage Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the firebrand yet cool former India captain, in his long-forgotten role as the Finisher. The match between the bottom ranked Champions, the defending Champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the five-time Champions Mumbai Indians (MI), played at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on 21 st April went down the wire with CSK needing a four in the last ball to win. And MSD was at the crease. In that momentous last over bowled by Jaydev Unadkat and CSK needing 17 runs to win, the first ball gets the blast-away Dwaine Pretorius (22 off 14) out LBW; Dwaine Bravo comes in and takes a single to let Dhoni take over; 16 runs to get now in 4 balls; Dhoni hits the third ball to a towering six; next ball a four; the fifth ball Dhoni hits the ball and scampers desperately back for the second run to be able to face the last ball, a feat that he missed in the historic semi-final against New Zealand in the ICC World Cup-2019; now a 4 needed in

IPL-2022: David Miller-Rashid Khan Blitzkrieg Powers GT To Its 5th Win Handing Over 5th Defeat To CSK!

Image
After watching this cliffhanger of a match between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the second of the Sunday double-header today in Pune I just couldn’t stop myself from writing a bit about it. Chasing a moderately challenging but tricky nonetheless target of 170 runs set by CSK the GT started in a horrible way passing through the phases of regular fall of wickets at 1 for 1, 2 for 2. 16/3. 48/4 and 87/5, losing in the process all the batsmen except for David Miller and without the momentum-building skipper Hardik Pandya, not playing today due to injury. At the stage of 87/5 in the 13 th over GT was looking at defeat needing 83 runs in 38 balls with only one recognized batsman Miller and stand-in skipper cum bowling all-rounder Rashid Khan just coming in who did not quite do well with the bat in the previous matches. As you know nothing is for certain in cricket, a game of glorious uncertainties, Rashid Khan had other incredible ideas as if he was in a dream.   F

Movie Bachchan Paandey: The Comedy Of Horrors!

Image
An out and out formulaic Bollywood movie ‘Bachchan Paandey’ has been theatrically released all over India on 18 th March 2022 and then Amazon Prime Video started streaming it from 15 th April. The movie’s release has been pending since December 2020 due to various reasons including the pandemic. ‘Bachchan Paandey’ is produced Sajid Nadiadwala of the famed filmmaking house of the Nadiadwala that is celebrating 70 years of filmmaking and is directed   by Farhad Samji. The film is reportedly a remake of the Tamil movie ‘Jigarthanda’ (2014) and also supposedly inspired by the South Korean flick ‘A Dirty Carnival’ (2006). The hero or the antihero or the protagonist or the antagonist, whatever you may decipher after watching the movie, of the movie is the immensely popular action-comedy hero Akshay Kumar with the female lead played by the new generation heroine Kriti Sanon. Popular comedian and character actor Arshad Warsi also plays a key role and Jacqueline Fernandez does a cameo.

IPL-2022: 5-Time Champions MI Crashes To 6th Straight Defeat Even As Top Spots Are Up For Grabs!

Image
Five-time IPL Champions Mumbai Indians (MI), the maximum number any franchise has won the tournament title, has crashed to their consecutive sixth defeat in IPL-2022 losing to Lucknow Super Giants (LPG) by 18 runs today at the Brabourne stadium Mumbai. The irony gets even bitter as this time the tournament has most of the league matches being played in Mumbai, the erstwhile home ground for the team, leaving the crowds with nothing to cheer for. I just wonder if this is some kind of a jinx with the newly appointed Team India captain in all three formats going on a losing spree like the former captain Virat Kohli with his team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) figuring at the bottom steps of the points ladder in almost all the previous versions of the IPL! Now, MI is looking at a disastrous ouster from the tournament unless it achieves the near-impossible task of winning at least 7 of its remaining 8 matches to stay in contention.   What ails MI? Well, to my mind the biggest factors

Our Funarena! Celebrating The 1 Million Views Milestone!

Image
Our blog/website has crossed the 1 million views mark today! This, of course, cannot be considered a significant achievement considering the long 14 years it took for this. Besides, we're not sure how much of those hits belongs to the 'suspicious' kind! Nonetheless, a milestone is a milestone and we're indeed happy about this short of an allround celebration! And, in light of our humble efforts in that direction this milestone cannot be dismissed altogether. We thank all our genuine readers/followers for helping us achieve this milestone and we sincerely look forward to having their continued patronage in future. I also appeal to them to give their precious feedback to help us serve them better with improved quality  writings.  This blog was started as humor/fun blog that really started picking up from about 2009. Over the years, we did diversify in terms of sports, movies and entertainment. And of course, bits of news and important events/happenings; because, as a news

The Love Raid!

Image
The news spread like wildfire in the closely-knit conservative residential colony in a small town somewhere in India, inhabited by mostly high-caste families. The colony basically consists of three crisscrossing small lanes and the houses on both sides of the lanes are independent old-style ones, invariably with front gardens. We’re not sure how exactly the news became a wildfire and who exactly started it. The day being a hot summer sunny Sunday the inhabitants were enjoying a respite from work and most of them had just had elaborate breakfasts. A few of the heads of households had gone to the weekly market for fresh vegetables and fish or mutton. It’s possible that the ones going to or returning from the market and crossing a particular house noticed the commotion. Or, the next-door neighbors must have become aware of the disturbance.   It supposedly happened just after 9 in the morning. One or two concerned mobile calls and the accompanying WhatsApp messages started vibrating fr

Imran Khan: Defiance, Diplomacy And Friendships Of The Unconstitutional Kind!

Image
Imran Khan became the first ever Prime Minister of Pakistan to be voted out of power through a no-confidence motion after a daylong high-voltage drama yesterday that finally culminated in a midnight climax in Islamabad. Perhaps this is the reason as to why the Pakistan parliamentary system had never been used to such political games behind a confidence move unlike in India where such games are very common and often the transfers of power are more or less smooth; Pakistan being more used to army coups and abrupt, often violent, changes. However, the delaying tactics indulged in by Imran and team were not at all constitutional. The irony gets more emphatic as Imran Khan was a democratically elected Prime Minster in 2018 general elections. The monthlong political theatrics had seemingly ended on 7 th April when the Supreme Court of the country ordered the confidence motion to take place on 9 th April thus reconstituting the dissolved National Assembly. But Imran had other ideas still.
